The weight is not a style choice. A chain that goes on and stays on lives a rougher life than anything kept in a box, and high-carat gold is soft. Thin gauge stretches at the clasp and wears thin at the link; heavier gauge just wears in. A kara goes further still, one solid piece with no clasp to fail, because it is not meant to come off.

Ask the weight before the price.
Nothing on this side of the counter wears a ticket, because the price is worked out in front of you. A chain comes off its hook and goes straight on the scale. The gram figure meets that morning’s rate, the making goes on top, quoted out loud, and that is the whole number. The same sum prices a kara, a signet and everything else in the shop.
