Plain bands for every day, wedding bands, and behind them the patterned work: engraved, twisted and seal-topped, in the same deep 21 and 22 carat as the rest of the cabinet.
Stone-set rings are the part of the tray we can least promise you. The stock turns over week to week, so the piece you saw a fortnight ago has probably moved on and something new is sitting in its place. If you are coming in for one ring in particular, call ahead and ask what is in the case.
Whatever the style, the price is worked out the way everything here is: the weight of the gold at the day’s rate, plus the making. Nothing in the tray wears a ticket, because that number moves every morning. How the pricing works →
A ring never goes back in the box. It is worn every day, against everything.
Daily wear asks more of a ring than of anything else in this cabinet. High-carat gold is soft, so a band meant for every day is made the old way: heavy in the shoulder, round at the edge, nothing thin enough to bend against a door handle.
The surface will keep score, and it should. Fine scratches settle into an even glow, and when you want the shine back, a polish at the bench returns the colour without taking any weight off the gold. Cleaning and polishing →
The fit, beforethe pattern.
A ring is chosen by eye and lived in by fit. Three short facts cover most of what the tray will ask of you.
- A–Zhow sizes are written
- Australia writes ring sizes as letters rather than numbers. There is no need to arrive knowing yours. It is measured on your hand, at the counter, before anything is fitted.
- ½size snug, on wide bands
- The wider the band, the tighter it wears. A wide band is fitted about half a size up from a slim one, so it still passes the knuckle without a fight.
- 22carat, kind to the bench
- High-carat gold takes resizing well. A plain band in 21 or 22 can be taken up or down cleanly at the bench, so fit is never the reason to walk away from a ring.
Fingers change with the weather and with the years. When a ring stops fitting, the bench takes it up or down and hands it back true.
