Fingers change, and rings change hands. A resize takes a ring up or down at the bench inside this shop, and the job is not finished until it sits right on your finger at the counter.

Down is a subtraction: a measured piece comes out of the shank and the ends are drawn together. Up is an addition: gold of the same carat is let in, so the join carries the colour as well as the size.

The measure
It starts on the hand, not in the tray. The finger is sized on the stick at the counter, and the talk takes in knuckles and weather, because fingers run finer on a cold Kilburn morning than they do in January.
The cut
The band is opened where the pattern gives a natural break. Going down, a measured piece of the shank comes out. Going up, a gap is made for the new gold. Either way, the pattern decides where the saw lands.
The join
The ends are soldered and the circle rounded true on the mandrel. Heat travels up a shank, so a stone set near the join may be lifted first and reset after, and every setting is checked once the circle has changed.
The fitting
The last gauge is your finger. The ring goes back on the hand it was sized for at the counter, because the job is finished when it sits right, not when it measures right.
Bring the ring in. What it needs is settled at the counter before you leave it with us, and most resizes are back within [typical turnaround, to confirm with the owner].
What comes in with it
A ring rarely arrives alone. The same visit often hands over a chain with a tired clasp, or asks for the colour brought back before a wedding. And plenty of resizes start in the cabinet, with a new ring that fits everything but the finger.
